The Cinema Olo, retrospective review of Alexander Sroczyński's films during ENH
17.07.2008

Since the 17th of July the 8th International Festival Era New Horizons has been taking place in Wroclaw. Between the 19th and 26th of July during the Festival, as a part this year 60th anniversary of Polish animation, there will be the retrospective of Alexander Sroczyński, the animated film creator, the illustrator and the author of satirical drawings.

The project aims to present a profile of Alexander Sroczyński and the author's commercial cinema. Alexander Sroczyński is without a doubt one of the greatest individuals and "stars" in the history of Polish animation. The remarkable director, film writer, creator of film animation and draftsman, is the author of films, which were awarded prizes on many Festivals, including Oberhausen, Chicago and Krakow. In 1989 he moved to the USA, where he continued his artistic career by making film, practicing satirical drawing and illustrating books (including one with Whoopi Goldberg).

This year's review will be the first full retrospective of Alexander Sroczyński in Poland. His 28 films will create three, almost 90 minute, sets (each set will be shown three times). Two documentaries presenting a film profile of the artist will be an additional attraction during the review. The first, made by Jerzy Armata in 2000, is from the series ‘Anima' and is completely dedicated to the phenomenon of Sroczyński's art. The second, from 1994, is entitled "Olo in New York" and was directed by Rafał Mierzejewski.

Each showing will be introduced by Jerzy Armata, the retrospective's curator, who is also a journalist and film critic and remarkable specialist of film animations. The special guest of the retrospective will be the director himself - so the audience will have a chance to meet not only the Sroczyński's art, but also himself.

Alexander Sroczyński's retrospective also received a more long-lasting documentation - a specially edited catalogue with the greatest works of the artist. The publication under the edition of Jerzy Armata will be rich in graphics content, including frames from Sroczyński's films, his satirical drawings (published, among others, in Szpilki, Playboy, New York' Times) and book illustrations (Sroczyński collaborated, amongst others, with the actress and the author of children books, Whoopi Goldberg). The illustrations will be complemented with an interview with the artist and a full bio-filmography.

In addition, in the catalogue of the Festival Era New Horizons there will be an essay analysing Sroczyński's work and filmography together with notes and briefs on all his animations.
